I have recently received a number of e-mails expressing concerns over the nature of support for people suffering with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
I know that MND and associated illnesses such as dementia are truly devastating and have a substantial impact on the quality of life of the sufferer and their loved ones. As you will know, there is currently no cure, but treatment aims to ensure the best quality of life possible and seeks to compensate as much as possible for the loss of bodily functions.
I recognise the tremendous hard work and dedication that carers provide in devoting a significant proportion of their lives to supporting friends and family members in such difficult circumstances. I agree that carers must receive the right support to help them carry out their caring roles and a new cross-Government National Carers Strategy is being introduced to look at what more can be done to support existing and future carers.
During my time as Minister of Health, I pressed for Mental Health issues to be treated with equal importance to physical health issues. I was particularly pleased that during my time there, the department were able to extend strategic clinical networks to include, amongst others, mental health, dementia and neurological conditions.
Many of my constituents have however raised concerns regarding the costs of social care, especially in relation to the policy outlined in the party manifesto. Following the election, the Government will consult on all options for future social care. I am happy that the concerns of many of my constituents have been considered. I welcome the consultation as it will investigate the various options to ensure a fair, sustainable, and accessible social care system and I look forward to hearing the results.
Thank you for contacting me on this important issue.
