I have received e-mails about EDM 128 concerning the Parliamentary scrutiny of prospective post-Brexit UK trade deals.
As I’ve mentioned in other campaign responses, I choose not to sign EDMs due to their excessive cost and limited legislative effect. Nonetheless, I will set out my thoughts here.
The economic uncertainty of Brexit presents many challenges for businesses and individuals alike. It is in the context of such uncertainty that the value of single-market membership and indeed the customs union, have become even more apparent.
The Government has outlined its intention to bring forward a motion on the final agreement to be approved by both Houses of Parliament and expects the vote to cover both the withdrawal agreement and the UK’s future relationship with the EU. Any new treaty that the UK agrees with the EU will be scrutinised by Parliament and will be subject to the provisions of the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act before ratification.
I will of course do my duty as your Member of Parliament in scrutinising legislation that comes before Parliament.
Thank you for contacting me on this important issue.
