Having worked in several departments across my time as an MP, I have the utmost respect for the Civil Service and the hardworking individuals that help to ensure the country continues to run smoothly. Though some constituents have contacted me with concerns over upcoming changes to the Service, rest assured that these are made to ensure that it remains a forward-thinking and world-class institution on which we can depend.
The Performance Management Review currently being undertaken by the Service will ensure that it continues to build on its success in cutting discrimination and rewarding excellence. The Cabinet Office’s workforce plan is clear that the Civil Service should be a role model for other UK employers by not only attracting the best talent, but also valuing their diverse experience.
This drive on social mobility aims to give every talented individual the opportunity to progress and ensure that the organisation's policies and services reflect the communities that it serves. I am pleased to see that the Cabinet Office is already trialling methods to build on this success, and is due to make an announcement in due course.
The service's Compensation Scheme is also being renewed in order to ensure greater consistency between payouts for redundancy and exit pay across the public sector. I think it is important that compensation remains fair and level, and that we put an end to the excessive redundancy payments which cost the taxpayer millions every year.
I understand that the Government is due to report on these changes in the near future, and I will make sure to follow this announcement closely to ensure taxpayers continue to get good value for money across the public sector.
