I have recently received a number of e-mails regarding the price of energy.
I share the concerns that many constituents have over increasing energy prices. As you are aware, the Government made a proposal to extend the price protection currently in place for some vulnerable energy consumers to more of those on the poorest value tariffs. The Business and Energy Secretary, Greg Clark, has written to Ofgem asking what action the regulator intends to take to safeguard customers. Ofgem has committed to taking prompt action, in consultation with consumer experts, to develop proposals including a safeguard tariff.
I am pleased that Theresa May has followed through with the manifesto pledge to cap energy prices in her speech at the recent Conservative Party Conference. Ensuring customers get a fair deal on the energy they use remains a priority, especially for the most vulnerable customers who are less likely or able to switch to a preferential tariff. I am pleased that the concerns of many consumers have been considered and I look forward to seeing the legislation come before Parliament.
Thank you for contacting me on this important issue.
